Maritime Lisbon

3/27/22- Yesterday we flew back to Lisbon from Maderia so today we decided to explore the city! We started out at a cafe that the owner claimed the pancakes were "to die for" I would rate them more of a "good, but death is not necessary". After breakfast we headed over to a museum that went through the history of Lisbon and the 8.5 scale earthquake that destroyed the city in 1755. We also learned about the different uses of their square over the years. In the 1900's it was used as a parking lot! They rebuilt it under the wise rule of their king who quickley took plans into action. After the first museum we saw a bubble man making huge bubbles for kids in the square and watched him for a while as the bubble men were our favorite when we came here 10 years ago. We then went to a second museum that displayed the different things explorers brought back to Portugal during their maritime empire. Portugal is where most explorers left from including Ferdinand Magellin, Henry the Navigators fundings, Vasco da Gama, and many others. It featured a Chinese opera exhibit that went through the different costumes each type of character wears. It also talked about how the old samurai's of Japan would control their armies with a fan. After the second museum we went to a Monestary with really cool Baroque architecture. Then we walked over to the tower/gate/port that all the explorers would sail from. After the gate we went and got really good burgers then went and watched the "sunset" from a lookout over the city.
